The Oasis Loss Modelling Framework is an open source catastrophe modelling platform – free to use, built by the market, and designed to give insurers, reinsurers, model developers, and researchers genuine choice in how they access and use cat models.
Version 2.5.0 marks the completion of a multi-year architectural modernisation, transitioning to a pure Python codebase that is faster to deploy, easier to maintain, and more accessible to the broader modelling community. The release also implements full support for OED version 5 and ORD outputs, actively promoting open results data standards across the market.
The ecosystem now spans over 100 risk models from more than 20 providers covering perils from traditional windstorm, flood and earthquake, to newer perils like cyber, with new models joining frequently.
Oasis Platform — a scalable loss modelling engine with a REST API for integration into pricing, portfolio management, and exposure reporting workflows, deployable on-premises or in the cloud.
Oasis UI — a web-based interface for uploading exposure data, executing models, and retrieving results, designed for both commercial re/insurers and public sector risk applications.
Oasis MDK (Model Development Kit) — a Python toolkit for building, testing, and packaging catastrophe models ready for deployment on the platform.
Underpinning everything are the Open Data Standards (ODS) — a robust, transparent data format designed to improve interoperability between platforms and models and reduce the frictional costs of data processing across the industry. ODS expands beyond property coverage into liability, cyber, and marine sectors, creating a unified standard for the whole market.
Three principles guide the Oasis platform architecture:
Python-first, built for simplicity — the platform runs on a pure Python stack, removing the mixed-language complexity of earlier versions. This makes the codebase easier to contribute to, faster to deploy, and more accessible to the wider catastrophe modelling community without sacrificing performance at scale.
Open source infrastructure throughout — standard, well-supported frameworks are used at every layer: Celery and RabbitMQ for job management, Django for web services, Docker and Kubernetes for containerised deployment, and GitHub for open development and version control.
Designed for integration — a clean REST API sits at the heart of the platform, making it straightforward to embed Oasis into existing enterprise workflows, whether that’s a re/insurer’s pricing system, an exposure management tool, or a third-party analytics platform.
All code is available on GitHub under the permissive BSD 3-Clause licence, free to use and adapt for any purpose.
